Monte Cook leaves WotC.
This is the first major hit Next has taken. _________________

I don't know why Monte left, but I can tell you why I'm glad he did. You know that OGL thing we're always talking about? I think we can be sure that Next isn't going to be as open as 3.5 or Pathfinder, simply because if they were, we would already know about it.
Monte built his own personal company on the OGL/d20 license. |

My personal theory is a conflict with the upper management of WotC and Mr. Cook.
The CEO of WotC is pretty, well, divorced from the gaming experience and in interviews he's given he doesn't really seem like someone passionate about D&D or gaming. He's not credited in any RPG books I've seen. So he's a suit and businessman who probably doesn't "get" the fans or their needs. This can be good on some levels as it means it's not a writer or editor running a company, but it also means there's a disconnect from what the consumers want 'n' need and what the company wants and/or thinks the consumers want 'n' need.
Monte's leaving wouldn't be so bad if WotC didn't have such a bad track record of communicating with their fans and the larger D&D community. Mike Mearls has been trying hard to fix the fan's impression of WotC, mend bridges, and improve communication. But there might be limits, which doesn't bode well for the future of the game. _________________ My Webcomic:
